What is Impetigo?
Impetigo is a highly contagious bacterial skin infection that causes clusters of red sores, blisters, or golden-brown crusty lesions. It is most common in young children but can affect people of any age.
The infection spreads easily through direct skin contact, contaminated objects, or scratching and touching affected areas.
You should seek help from Blackpool Express Chemist if:
- You or your child have small clusters of sores, blisters, or golden-brown scabs.
- The sores are spreading but not widespread across large areas.
- The infection is not healing on its own within a few days.
- You need fast relief without waiting for a GP appointment.
Types of Impetigo
There are two main types of impetigo, both of which are caused by bacteria:
- Non-bullous Impetigo – The most common type, which starts as small red sores that burst, leaving honey-coloured crusts. This form is usually not painful but may be itchy.
- Bullous Impetigo – A less common but more severe type that causes fluid-filled blisters (bullae) that can grow larger before bursting. The skin underneath remains red, raw, and sore.
Causes & Risk Factors of Impetigo
Impetigo occurs when bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes) enter the skin through:
- Cuts, scrapes, or insect bites – Damaged skin is more vulnerable to infection.
- Existing skin conditions – Eczema, dermatitis, or athlete’s foot can increase the risk.
- Weakened immune system – People with weakened immunity are more prone to infections.
- Hot and humid weather – Bacteria thrive in warm conditions, making impetigo more common in summer.
- Close contact with an infected person – Schools, nurseries, and crowded areas increase the spread.
Preventing the spread: Regular handwashing, keeping wounds clean, and avoiding sharing personal items (e.g., towels, and bedding) can help reduce the risk.
Seek Treatment From A GP If:
- The infection has spread widely or covers large areas of the body.
- You have bullous impetigo (large fluid-filled blisters).
- You or your child have a high fever, swollen lymph nodes, or feel unwell.
- You have recurring impetigo infections.

How is Impetigo Treated?

Topical Antibiotics (Fusidic Acid Cream – Fucidin)
- Applied directly to the affected area to kill bacteria and clear up the infection.
- Typically used 2-3 times daily for 5-7 days.
- Helps reduce the risk of spreading the infection to others.
Oral Antibiotics (If Required)
- For more stubborn infections, oral antibiotics may be prescribed.
- Only given if the infection is not improving with cream or is at risk of spreading.
Hygiene & Aftercare Advice
- Keep the area clean & dry – Avoid touching or scratching the sores.
- Wash hands regularly – Helps prevent further spread.
- Avoid sharing personal items – Towels, bedding, and clothing should not be shared.
